iSuppli Corp. (El Segundo, CA), an electronics-industry research and analysis firm, has reported that Samsung SDI Inc. (Seoul, South Korea), became the dominant performer in the organic, light-emitting diode (OLED) market in 2004 with a 44% share. iSuppli notes that internal sales to Samsung’s mobile-phone business significantly fueled its strong performance.
In 2004, manufacturers sold 31 million OLEDs, which are an alternative to LCDs for mobile-phone displays, a nearly twofold increase from 16.8 million the year before. RiT Display (Hsinchu Industrial Park, Taiwan), which won 22% of the industry’s share, surged to 2nd place on the list, whereas Pioneer, whose sales comprised 20% of OLEDs sold, slid to third.
